For this piece, I hesitated a lot regarding the armor and the shield of Saint Michael and finally decided to take a medieval model as a reference. It’s a bit of a fantasy armor but it is a model of a real medieval manuscript.
Medieval painters had to draw many things based on their imagination. Because there were no photographic reference like today, It might be different from reality, but their power of imagination produced expressions that surpassed reality. I have always highly regarded medieval painter’s imagination.
