Miho KUROYANAGI

I am Japanese. My grandfather was a professional graphic artist who influenced me a lot when I was a child. Then, starting with Japanese traditional art, my journey soon brought me to study European classical forms of beauty where I discovered medieval illuminated miniature. An artistic revelation which led me to France to study under the mentorship of a traditional enlumineur. Then, I polished my techniques for several years before I decided to open my own workshop, “L’Atelier du Hérisson d’Or”. I am currently working from Tokyo, Japan. I can communicate with you in English, French, and Japanese.

Previously, I had my own photo posted, but for privacy reasons, I’ve temporarily replaced the image with a depiction of a medieval scribe. Just to clarify, I’m a woman, and my hairstyle is not a tonsure! ; )⇒

What are the values and techniques defining l’Atelier du Hérisson d’Or?

Authentic materials, traditional illumination techniques

I am only using traditional goat or veal parchments. Gold leaves are applied through medieval traditional gilding techniques. Gold leaves are 24K made in Kanazawa, Japan.

Reproductions as accurate as possible

Monks who were doing miniatures were scribes (moines copistes) reproducing the same work over and over again. When I reproduce an historical work, I am committed to do it as faithfully as possible, be it in style, size or materials.

Creative and customized miniatures

I love to engage in a creative process to find an illustration, a style and a text that will fit a specific need for a unique occasion (wedding, baptism…) or just to embody someone sense of art or philosophy. You can tell me what you want and we can find the right design together!

Text and Calligraphy

I will adapt the calligraphic style to the design period of the image. Texts can be chosen in any language.

Vintage frames

I love old and beautiful frames. I am always trying to match a specific piece of work with a frame that will fit and enhance the beauty of it. Tell me your taste and we will find a frame that will fit the art and your aesthetic sense.

European and Japanese art fusion

I have always loved culture combination and French Japonism had been a source of inspiration for a long time now. When I decided to work as a professional artist, I decided to create my own personal vision, as a Japanese, of the European illuminated miniature. If you like Illuminated art fusion, you can order a specific Japanese subject that will be translated into illuminated art form.
